CPU 24 °C ?

Post by Wastral on Sun Aug 03, 2008 10:15 pm

Umm... i think i have a little problem, my cpu isint running real hot, its running at (24 °C but, its always got 99% CPU Usage 24/7. I noticed it when i was playing my music and it was lagging like a bitch and the music sounded like a chipmunk. i have a fair idea its my hdd because it is 2nd hand and its real fucking loud and its got a loud high pitch screach!,

Also my cd roms arnt working, i have too here, they where both going but one stoped working so i used the other one, now that has seemed too stop Sad but because i was a cheapy when i built the computer i just ran the hdd and cd rom off one ide cable.

My motherboard has 4 sata plugs, so should i go buy a sata hdd and cd rom and use that or will i just get away with a sata hdd and keep the ide cd rom?

Please help me Razz

Hard disk drives are not a common cause of processor distress, they're too slow to challenge the processing capabilities of a pc. They can be a bottleneck when you're waiting for something to read/write but that's not something your CPU would choke on.
Grab yourself some updated AV software like Avast or AVG to check the virus angle. Also have a look at your task manager in the processes tab to get an idea of where the memory is getting used, if you've too many programs running (relative to available memory) and the computer is having to constantly swap data in and out of the page file (Storing RAM data on HDD when RAM is full) that could explain the HDD going nuts all the time and the sluggish response times. E.G. MSN client casually hogs about 70MB of RAM even when it ain't doing shit so best to have that closed when not in use.

Okay two things, first what type of CPU do you have exactly? Secondly what brand/model hard drive do you have?

Okay thanks..

First off 24c for that CPU is insanely low, Prescott class CPUs (which you have) usually run twice that temperature if not more, so I question where you are seeing this temperature reading from? For the hard drive, easiest thing to start with is download Seatools from Seagate here http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools

You can burn it to a CD and then boot off the CD and do a full test of the hard drive. This will tell you if you have a problem with the hard drive or not.

Hope this helps!

You might have a raft of problems.. as for the CPU, have you checked the processes tab to see what actual process is using all the CPU? Probably your first point of call.

Next to performance on the task manager? (you know alt ctrl del -> task manager)

Limewire is not recommended Evil or Very Mad

Well, sounds okay if you have some disposable $$$ but it may not fix your problem. Can't you borrow a CD drive from someone at all? I usually only spend $$ if I know I need to drunken

ive got too drives, they both work, but arnt working now for some reason.

I think i know what the problem is, there is only one ide connector on the motherboard, which means i am sharing a cable between the hdd and cd roms, i think something there is causing a interfearence with one of the too. so could i just upgrade my cd rom drive too sata or somthing like that (Cd roms are normaly cheaper than Hard drives) or do i have too convert both of them too sata?
